Laser Cut Car Key – High-Security Car Keys

In automotive key parlance, High-Security Keys simply refers to the kind of blade the key arrives with. Most car keys are single sided while others are double-sided. The single-sided imply having the blades on top only while the double imply blades on top and bottom. These keys are easy to duplicate and copy. Unlike these regular keys, the laser cut keys are milled at the center of the blade with the aid of a laser cut key device or machine possessing a unique cutting blade. Often, most car owners are ignorant, lacking the knowledge that their cars possess a high-security car key. This is because; the keys do no possess buttons nor batteries.

Keyless entry systems or electronic key fobs for vehicles has been standard now for decades, but now there are automobiles that operate with something called a transponder key. What is transponder key and how do they work? More importantly, what do you do if you need a replacement transponder key?

What is transponder key –

The term transponder is made up of two words, “Transmitter” and “Responder”. The transponder key fob transmits a signal that is received and responded to my a receiver inside your vehicle. In newer vehicles, there is no need to insert a key into an ignition and turn the key to start the car. There is keyless electronic ways of doing this instead. As long as the transponder key is in your hand or pocket, you simply step on the brake and push the button to start the car. If you are trying to open a car door or lock them, you press the button on the key fob. They operate on a remote electronic signal and function only when charged with a battery.

The key fob for the transponder key has a small short range radio transmitter inside that communicates with the corresponding receiver inside your vehicle’s locks. When you push the button on the key fob, it sends a brief signal to the vehicle to signal whether you want to lock or unlock the doors or start the ignition. Some transponder keys are programmed to encrypt and rotate signal codes to make it more difficult for car thieves to intercept and duplicate the signal to gain access to your automobile.

What happens when you need a new battery in your transponder key?

You follow the steps to replace the battery which usually mean opening up the key fob, buying the proper size of battery, removing the old one, replacing it with a new one and reassembling the key fob unit. Sometimes, an extra step of reprogramming the transponder key is needed.

With the exception of classic cars or those made before electronic key technology, gone are the days when all you needed to open up a locked vehicle was a coat hanger and time to patiently jiggle the lock open. While transponder keys make a vehicle more difficult to break into or steal, when you lock yourself out of your automobile that operates with a transponder key, you need to take other measures of getting back inside.

Transponder Key Services

If you have lost your transponder key, you will need to get a replacement which will require programming. A qualified automotive locksmith is able to do this for you and typically charges much less prices than those your car dealership will charge. A locksmith is also able to handle repairs to the inside of your transponder key fob such as re-soldering components that work loose.

When you want to know what is transponder key and how to get one reprogrammed, it is time to contact a knowledgeable locksmith technician who will be able to answer all of your key questions and get your key programmed on the spot.

Car Key Types

Car keys not only open your car's doors and trunk, as well as start the ignition; but, they are an important part of your vehicle's security. New and constantly changing technology has given us multiple types of automobile keys. It is important to understand the type of key you have in case something goes wrong, or you lose your key.

Traditional Car Key – These keys are made of metal and have grooves cut to match your car's ignition. Some cars have a separate key to open the doors, glove box, or trunk. The key can easily be duplicated at a local hardware store key cutting machine.

Valet Key – The valet key is specially designed to use when your car is parked by a valet. The key is able to only start your car's ignition and is unable to open the glove box or trunk. Some valet keys even restrict the amount of power the engine puts out to prevent a valet worker from taking your car for a spin.

Transponder Keys – Sometimes called a chip key, the transponder key is an electronic key that has a computer microchip and is electronically coded. The chip is protected inside a plastic encasement. The code is matched with the vehicle to allow the key to start the engine or open the car doors. The transponder key is designed to prevent theft and are difficult to duplicate. It works with an activated radio signal that is sent from the car. Some cars are designed to shut down entirely if the wrong key is used in an attempt to start the engine.

Remotes – Most cars that are manufactured today come with a remote control. These remotes allow the owner of the vehicle to lock and unlock doors, open or close tailgates or trunks, and tun on or off the car alarm. The operate by using either a radio transmitter or infrared signal to send a coded message to the receiver that is inside the vehicle's design.

Keyless Entry Systems – As the name implies, in a keyless entry system, you do not need a physical key to enter your vehicle. You unlock the car with a remote or a keypad that is located on or around the door handle. You may have a key that starts the ignition or a push button.

Rolling Codes – The rolling codes key sends a new code each time the car key is used. It differs from the transponder key in that it does not send the same code every time. Instead, each time the key is used, a separate code is sent.

If your remote or transponder key fails to work, first check the battery if it is accessible. If you suspect there is a radio interference, try using the remote control closer to your car. Some remotes have a bypass system to allow you to use the metal key that is sometimes tucked away inside the plastic toggle remote. When all else fails, or if your key is lost, it's time to contact a local locksmith who can get you back on the road again in no time.
